Art Pepper, a significant figure in the West Coast jazz scene, had already made a name for himself with his emotionally charged playing and distinctive tone on the alto saxophone. By the time Intensity was recorded in 1960, Pepper had endured several legal troubles and stints in prison due to his struggles with heroin addiction. These personal challenges often added a raw, emotional dimension to his music, and Intensity is an album where this is especially evident.
At this point in his career, Pepper had fully embraced a more aggressive and passionate style of playing, moving away from the "cool" West Coast sound associated with earlier recordings. His sound on this record is intense, as the title suggests, but also lyrical and deeply emotional, blending bebop with elements of blues and hard bop.
