Enjoying an unavailable classic
I was thrilled to find a source for a CD of a recording I had been given on a cassette tape back in the early 1980s, a certain performance of the Beethoven violin concerto I had never found elsewhere. Ordering was simple enough, the price excellent. It was shipped in an exceptionally sturdy custom cardboard mailer. The quality of the sound is excellent, a significant improvement over the copy of a copy I have on the aging cassette.

Beethoven Violin Concerto - Joseph Szigeti, violin - London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Antal Dorati,
Because of the format of the recording the only thing I've found I can play it on is my computer, and then only after a hassle. Why can't you use a format that is more reconisable?
NOSTALGIA APLENTY
Caveats need to be made for this late effort by the much-loved Szigeti, given the insecurity of his tone and intonation due to the advancing neurological condition from which he suffered in his final years. The Mercury recordings were the products of his last visits to sound studios and while the Brahms Horn Trio, Second Sonata, Violin Concerto and the disc of solo sonatas by various twentieth-century composers are relatively free from signs of the deteriorating technique, this disc of the Beethoven Concerto is often an uncomfortable listen. Dorati and the LSO do their best and give admirable support and the Mercury sound is excellent. A minor technical let- down: the final chord has its reverberation cut short to a fraction of a second, so we do not get the usual momentary lingering of location ambience. So all in all for nostalgists only.
