Brahms Symphony No. 2 - Erich Leinsdorf conducts The Boston Symphony Orchestra
The newly released version of Brahms' Symphony 2 is an exceptional rendition, flawlessly performed. Including a high-definition variant, this album, expertly conducted by Leinsdorf, has garnered extensive acclaim for both its stellar performance and exceptional sound quality. However, it's important to acknowledge that the audio quality of this masterful symphony was previously confined by the constraints of analog reproduction technology and the limitations inherent to CDs. Now, this recent release serves as a perfect example of significant audio enhancements, providing a more immersive and enjoyable musical experience. It's an auditory delight that lets you fully appreciate the intricate nuances of Brahms' genius.
Great Performance, Phenomenal Sound
A Brahms Second very much in the mold of Toscanini or George Szell, but with better sound quality than either of those estimable recordings. In fact, HDTT has reproduced RCA's original sonics with a stunning, crystal-clear presence that delivers one of the truest sonic pictures of a symphony orchestra (the Boston Symphony at its 1960s peak) you will ever hear outside a 'live' performance at Boston's Symphony Hall. Leinsdorf's conducting is superb as is the playing of the BSO. I've owned this recording ever since its original Lp release and it has never sounded better than in HDTT's CD transfer from an RCA 15 ips commercial tape. Simply stunning!
Real Orchestral Sound
Beautiful sound from the BSO. Loverly performance from Leinsdorf with very clear sound balance. HDTT transfer is excellent. Highly recommended.
Lovely Performance and a Superb Transfer of Crystal Clear Recording
This performance of Brahms's Second Symphony dates from RCA's 'Dynagroove' days and many people remember the dreadful sound of those mid-1960s stereo Lps. Well, it turns out that the master tapes were fine and the problems developed during RCA's mastering of those tapes for Lp. Even so, this particular performance always sounded marvelous, even on Lp, with each section of the great Boston Symphony Orchestra registering with superb clarity. In fact, I take issue with the HDTT liner notes writer who thinks that Brahms used a fairly generalized approach to orchestral color ... In Leinsdorf's wonderfully propulsive but carefully considered performance, the various color textures sound out with such clarity that at times I was reminded of Webern and his development of 'klangfarbenmelodie'. I've characterized the performance as 'propulsive but carefully considered' but it might be more helpful to liken Leinsdorf's approach to other conductors like George Szell and William Steinberg. Very much of the Toscanini school, but never hard-driven. (Toscanini's 1952 mono Brahms 2 remains an acme of this kind of approach, but Leinsdorf, Szell, and Steinberg are worthy successors.) I have loved Leinsdorf's performance since it appeared on Lp and I am happy to report that HDTT's transfer (from a 15 ips tape) is outstanding in every way. One of the most truthfully beautiful presentations of the sound of an orchestra you will ever hear!
