Good but Something’s Missing
This is a good recording of a great performance, but something seems to be missing to my ears. It does not sound as “alive” as, for example, Manfred Honeck & the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra playing Brahms 4th symphony or the HDTT recording of Bruno Walter & the Columbia Symphony Orchestra playing Mozart's Symphonies 40 & 41. (All three in DSD 256)
A much better transfer of an outstanding performance
At last, this is a release that does service to Reiner's conducting with generally excellent sound. In earlier releases, you could tell that Reiner's was a special performance, but it was marred by poor transfers and (earlier on vinyl) by poor pressings. Many years ago, I heard the RCA vinyl release being played at a record store (anybody else remember those?) It was amazing but the record had all sorts of noise on its surface. A CD was released by Chesky, and while it did not have surface noise, some earlier passages seemed to waver and it had other sonic problems. This issue is generally excellent, although it does have a few moments of somewhat muddy sound and some overaccentuated highs early on. Not much later those early problems seem to disappear and everything sounds wonderful. And it only took about 40 years to get here!
Mid-pace Brahms
A fairly fast start that muddies some of the thick Brahmsian swirls, but no more than in other accounts. Not so fast (39') as the nonagenarian Stokowski whose 1974 RCA account sounds more rushed than the 37' it lasts, but more reasonable than snail-like Szell's (Sony 43'). Unlike other reviewers, I hear little difference between this and the Chesky CD version, but this may be because I listened to the DVD-A version where the DSD clarity may have been lost on conversion to PCM.

Great on all levels
The performance (conducted by Fritz Reiner), recording (engineered by the legendary Kenneth Wilkinson), and transfer (thank you HDTT!) are all superb. It's one of those golden age releases that put even many present day recordings to shame. The sound is clear. The imaging: superb. There's no clipping or distortion to speak of. The smooth analog sound is adequately conveyed. The string tone is never harsh (which is sometimes a problem with Brahms). If you love this symphony, you owe it to yourself to add this top-notch re-issue to your collection. I downloaded it in DSD 128 and experienced no problems. So glad I discovered this website.
