very good performance, slightly less ideal recording technique

As it is said in the booklet, during the recording only two mics were used that were placed at a distance in order to capture the sound of a true acoustic performance. While this objective seems to have been reached to a degree, to my ears it comes at the cost of losing some detail in the sound of the double bass. I'd recommend to download the sound sample to check whether or not that bothers you. Nothing to criticise about the actual performance.

ALL Stauffer è uno dei maggiori contrabbassisti americani degli ultimi decenni e numerose sono le sue collaborazioni con grandissimi artisti del panorama jazz internazionale. In questo lavoro suona con Tom Lawton che affonda la sua formazione nel mondo classico e il risultato di questa collaborazione è efficace: ne viene fuori un jazz che pur strizzando l'occhio alle influenza moderne assorbe in modo evidente notevoli influssi blues. Il risultato che nescaturisce è un disco piacevole che si fa ascoltare senza nessuna difficoltà. StrappoAcustico.

Cool, Laid Back Jazz

String bass and piano are two-thirds of a traditional jazz trio ... the usual additions can include drums, guitar, vibraphone, you name it. So I had my doubts about the coloristic potentialities offered by just two of a favored threesome, whatever that threesome might be. In the event, I shouldn't have had any worries at all because both the piano player and the bass turn out to be masters at finding those subtle gradations of color that make you want to listen to small ensemble jazz. And the recording is stunning; one of the best reproductions of the bass I've ever heard. Great chamber jazz and a pleasure to listen to as produced by HDTT.
