Fabulous "Reformation," Mediocre "Italian"
Much recorded these symphonies a year apart. When he was hot, he was tops; when he wasn't, he was pedestrian -- a very impulsive conductor. Symphony No. 4 is mundane. But Symphony No. 5 is my go-to performance with Munch possessed--terribly exciting. The treble needs a good boost in this transfer, but the bass and the breadth of sound is better than on the RCA reissue that I've now disposed of.
Unplayable
My Aune x5s player only plays DSD64 format. DSD128 ordered in error.
Soft but enjoyable performance.
The first movement of this recording seems to lack too much detail - a little too muffled sounding - likely attributable to the age of the original tapes. But part way in either I became accustomed to softness or the tapes improved, along with the detail. At that point it gives a real "you are there" illusion despite lacking the ultimate detail of modern DSD recordings. In fact, it is even better than many modern recordings, perhaps because of the original miking technique used or because the sound is closer to what you would actually hear at the symphony. Regardless, recommended if you aren't a detail freak and you just want to sit back and enjoy an good performance. Keep the "Pure DSD" recordings coming!
