Return of an old friend
December 1958 I received my first stereo…a GE portable. That was the first Christmas that consumer stereo was available. With that unit I received two albums, one of which was this one. It has been in my library continuously ever since. Various later incarnations did not have the original very dark “symphony of death” artwork, so I have found it and have used it for my iTunes versions. So I suppose I downloaded this for sentimental reasons…though I still like the reading and “Living Stereo” was so well produced. I have a half dozen other versions but I believe the HDTT transcription sounds splendid. Almost all of my HDTT downloads have been efforts to preserve treasured performances of a bygone time in the best sound possible and this one fulfills that goal as well.

Where's the passion
This reading left me with a somewhat distanced, cold reaction. It's very efficient, clean and superbly played, but where's the raw emotion, angst and passion This is a symphony of death, after all. To hear what's missing, try - for example - the Philharmonia/Kletzki, Leningrad/Mravinsky or LSO/Markevitch readings. You'll feel it at once... Decent sound, although the bass drum disappears in 3.
