A RACH 2 and TCHAI 1 with American Pianist Byron Janis.
While not in the top echelon of American Pianists, Byron Janis had a remarkable career, in both the States and Europe. Here, he gives very capable versions of probably the two most popular concert hall favourites, The Rachmaninov No 2 and Tchaikovsky No 1 with excellent Conductors Antal Dorati and the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (Rach2) and Herbert Menges and the London Symphony Orchestra(Tchai 1).These are old recordings but HDTT has brushed them up well. They’d make a great addition to an adventurous collector. I have many versions of both these superb piano concertos and it’s good to ramble through them all every now and then, just to smarten up my listening and analysing acuity. Byron is still playing occasionally at 94.
