great sounding cds- very happy with all you do

For Mazeppa first
This is one of my favorite recordings. The interpretation is gorgeous. Very good sound despite a lack of bass.

Taut, energetic, performances by the younger Karajan
Taut, energetic, sinewy, electrifying - yes, this is the younger Karajan still early in his tenure at Berlin. These are performances to sit you up straight in your seat. No pomposity, just great musical delivery. And this 1961 recording reflects the virtues of DGG's Tulip period of engineering with some of the best orchestral sound DGG delivered in that era, but lost in later years. These the typical DGG loss of weight in the bass, and some overall glassiness in the strings and a some excess brightness all over, but the impact of the brass rival what one might expect from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. "Mazeppa" is the standout performance--it is a performance of real power, force, and size, and it is filled with energy and dynamic contrast. The Fantasia on Hungarian Folk Melodies for piano and orchestra with pianist Shura Cherkassky is not a great composition, the rapport between the pianist and conductor set this apart and makes of it a real gem of a performance.
