Shostakovich Symphony No. 7 "Leningrad" Leonard Bernstein New York Philharmonic
This version of Shostakovich Symphony No. 7 has been my favorite, and this HDTT recording is even better sound than the original

The Gold Standard available in the Gold Standard !
Back when this came out it was hailed as the first stereo recording of this symphony which was premiered by Toscanini & NBC Symphony on a radio broadcast (to American audiences) during WWII. Actually it was the first stereo recording in the West but Mravinsky had previously recorded it in stereo for Melodiya…which is not a great treat since Soviet microphones were not up to Neumann standards back then. So Bernstein was the recording that really brought this symphony (now available in many recordings) back into the repertoire. His personal enthusiasm for the work shines through every measure. Critics at the time of release were debating as to whether this was up to Shostakovich standards or simply a relic of WWII. Time has proven its lasting worth and it has taken its rightful place in the Shostakovich canon. HDTT has squeezed all the juice out of the original tapes so this is the best incarnation of that recording ever presented to the public. I buy the 24/96 version and play it on my Mac…if you do similarly make sure the Midi utility is set up for 24/96 output. I hose that into a McIntosh Amp via USB cable and on to my speakers. That provides a near perfect representation of the recording…which is superior to what I was hearing before adjusting the computer output quality. HDTT brings us classic recordings in the best possible sound…which, for most recordings, makes the turntable vinyl version superfluous.

Bernstein’s usual interpretive genius.

A monumental performance finally in excellent sound quality
Bernstein earned raves for this performance on LP, and one can see why. The NYP plays with utter conviction and a good deal of virtuosity. And Bernstein leads with care and sensitivity. Still, the Columbia Records LP simply did not reproduce the sound that is captured by the mics in this recording, and the CD reissue didn't help matters. With HDTT's DXD transfer, one can finally hear all of the orchestra, hear all of the sound that is on the tape. And it is an exhilarating experience. While this performance may not match the utter intensity of Bernstein's later live recording with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (DGG 2006), that recording is only available in 24-96 or CD, with not nearly the sound quality of this DXD transfer. In looking for yet other DXD/DSD alternatives, the field is limited. One might consider the Noseda/LSO performance available in DSD256/DXD from NativeDSD, but it is a very different interpretation; very good, but not the monumental overwhelming intensity of Bernstein. And Bernstein's interpretation is one I need in my library because it is foundational, sui generis. As a reviewer back in the day commented, "Bernstein’s performance is so imposing that it is difficult to evaluate objectively, as its monumental weight alone can bowl one over to such an extent as to prevent one from making balanced relative judgements about other recordings... --Raymond Clarke, Music-Web International, August 1997. This is another excellent DXD transfer from HDTT. The sound quality is clear, clean, open and dynamic. Yes, it is a Columbia recording for better and worse. But this is the best reissue of this Columbia recording that I've heard and a pleasure to add to my library.
