White-hot Dvorák
I now have two extraordinary recordings of this concerto from HDTT, both in great sound. I would not part with either. One is from Pierre Fournier and George Szell, with the Berlin Philharmonic. That has exceptional clarity and rhythmic drive, with beautifully nuanced playing of the solo part. It doesn’t lack passion, but it’s more toward the Apollonian end of the scale than the Dionysian. It is coupled with an equally distinguished Dvorák Violin Concerto by Nathan Milstein, William Steinberg, and the Pittsburgh Piatagorsky and Munch, with the BSO, are heart-on-sleeve, and they’re equally marvelous in a complementary way. Rubato and tempo adjustments are freer but never merely mannered. The outer movements push impetuously forward, while the quiet closing minutes of the slow movement are poignant in their delicacy.
Truly great
Truly great performance by Munch and the BSO. And absolutely superb sound!
Dvorak Concerto For Cello And Orchestra In B Minor - Piatigorsky / Munch - Boston Symphony Orchestra
One of the greatest pieces for cello ever written by one of the the greatest musicians ever. What else can be said?
definitive? a must hear!
Just downloaded this and listened all the way through; couldn't stop. I'm excited! This is thought by many to be THE definitive recording of the Dvorak Concerto. Listening to it in Bob Witrak's riveting DXD sound, I'm tempted to agree. Piatigorsky is on fire as always, and the sometimes-staid BSO players light up under his influence in one of their best performances on record. And you hear it all on this one. Soundstage could be wider; beyond that this is a miracle. One you should jump at if you're a fan of this marvelous concerto. In performance and sonics like this, you understand why the Dvorak is one of the most popular concertos in the repertoire. A must have for audiophile classical music lovers.
