Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 3 - Vocalise - Leopold Stokowski - Pure DSD
TRANSFERRED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES
HDTT is now releasing this legendary conductor’s other great Desmar recording, in its first high resolution release (including Pure DSD), based on HDTT’s recent transfer of the original Desmar master tape. Stokowski is heard conducting the National Philharmonic Orchestra, a London orchestra created largely from “cherry-picking” front-desk and other esteemed players from other great London orchestras, primarily to make recordings.
Both pieces in this recording are by Stokowski’s old friend and colleague, Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), who was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, as well as one of that century’s greatest composers. Stokowski (1882- 1977) was five years younger than Rachmaninoff and lived a long, productive life, still making excellent recordings in his nineties (these were made at age 93).
As noted by Recording Producer Antony Hodgson in the original Desmar album, “The acoustics of this splendid hall ( West Ham Pentecostal Mission) with its very long reverberation period are very helpful to the recording engineer, and with Stokowski’s approval, the orchestra was divided into instrumental choirs placed apart from one another so that both spaciousness and clarity could be obtained. This of course recalls [Stokowski’s] methods of orchestral placement in his performances in America.” Hodgson further reported that Stokowski was “always happy with this orchestra.”

Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 3 - Vocalise - Leopold Stokowski
Stunning high resolution copy of an amazing performance. A must have in any collection.

Jump for joy; long overdue masterwork gets super treatment
Those of us – and I think there are many – who are committed Rachmaninoff lovers should jump for joy now that HDTT has released his Symphony #3 under Stokowski's baton. Stokowski knew Rachmaninoff well, and associated closely with him during their time together in the 1920's and 1930's with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Thus Stokowski is the ideal interpreter for the 3rd Symphony. To my ears, this interpretation sounds as if Stokowski and his superb pickup orchestra of top-drawer British players were well aware that they were likely "laying down the law" as to how this work should be interpreted. Again to my ears, this one sounds as if it might well be definitive. The work is very beautiful, and I believe it's been neglected because it comes after the 2nd, which is outrageously gorgeous and almost melodic enough to be popular music. That neglect is now a thing of the past! Hallelujah! Moreover, we Rachmaninoff fanciers are indebted to HDTT for serving up this performance in superb high-resolution sound. I listen to the DSD 256 download option, and as a card-carrying audiophile I must say I'm delighted.

Rachmaninoff, vocalise
Superb transfer, DSD 128. I have quite honestly never heard any other versions to compare it with. I have now listened to it a couple of times. What I will say is that it is a very captivating performance that really draws you in. Quite superb really. Highly recommended.

Authoritative and Powerful
I have to admit it did take me an extra listen to warm-up to this recording, coming as I did from the "Stokowski String Sound." Here the venue is palpably large, the violins are darker and a bit more distant, and the overall sonic effect is of a great Maestro steering a very large ship. On second listen, I realized this allows for some thrilling buildups of immense emotional power, capped by huge percussion which is definitely close-miked but to great effect. The Maestro's sense of Rachmaninoff's overall structure reveals a power in this symphony that had honestly come-off as disjointed in my other recordings. Ironically, these other (nameless) recordings were led by a bright and present violin sound, but at the loss of inner counterpoint in the other string sections, the woodwinds, the harp (+ vibes?), even the burnished brass. But all of that is here, the entire orchestra wonderfully re-presented by HDTT, in what sounds like a thoroughly Rachmaninoff-approved style of interpretation and recording. The Maestro is even able to coax a string portamento and micro-phrasing for a true "sighing" effect, even amidst larger buildups that now, thanks to all this other detail and the power of the percussion, actually make sense. Yes, the balance is quite different from what I had first expected, but that turns this album into a great revelation for a very underrated symphony! Then a beautiful Vocalise coda, with the sheen of those muted violins once again taking the lead, and a decrescendo into infinity...

A time machine back to the Stokowski sound
As a Philadelphia native, have always been a Stokowski fan. This recording is a classic - beautifully restored & clean.
