A Great Scheherazade
The Dorati Scheherazade is a great recording. None of the boomy tubbyness I associate with recordings of the Minneapolis Sym. The trumpets are spectacular. Dorati’s incisive sense of rhythm is fully evident.
Fine, if hardly great performance and sound
This was the second of Dorati's recordings of Scheherazade for Mercury and while it has it's moments, too often the tension sags, Rafael Druian's violin playing is no more than adequate, the woodwind are rather provincial and this can't compete with the likes of Kempe and the RPO (World Record Club), Markevitch and the LSO (Philips), or Svetlanov and the USSR SO (Melodiya). Mercury did a very good job with the sound, having plenty of projection, depth, clarity and presence. However as with many early stereo recordings the bass is shallow and the violin tone is edgy, despite the HDTT DSD256 transfer having far more space and transparency than the official Mercury CD.
Good Performance, Excellent Remastering
Dating from December 1958, this was Antal Dorati's second Minneapolis recording of Rimsky's perennially fresh and vibrant orchestral suite for Mercury. The performance is very good. But because there are occasions when the tension slips, Rafael Drurian's playing of the solo violin part lacks projection and the woodwind playing is provincial, it can't really compare with Kempe and the RPO (World Record Club), Markevitch and the LSO (Philips) or Svetlanov and the USSR SO (Melodiya). The sound is excellent, with plenty of clarity and definition, but like so many recordings of that era it lacks weight and the violin tone is thin. The DSD256 transfer however is the best around and sounds just as good as the first label US LP it was compared with.
Wonderful performance and recording - one of the great Mercury albums
This classic Mercury Living Presence recording by Bob Fine and Wilma Cozart has all of the sonic hallmarks that made these Mercury recordings so revered by music lovers and collectors. Huge soundstage, tremendous dynamics and impact, excellent detail and capture of the instruments abound. The performance by Dorati is one of the best—ravishingly lyrical in the slower movements (lovingly played), brutal onslaughts in the demandingly chaotic segments, filled with color and dance. It's a good 'un. And just now released in this excellent transfer by HDTT. I'm guessing this is from a commercially released 7.5ips tape because, while it sounds very good, I could still wish for a bit greater transparency in the sound—but I'm sure Bob got from this source tape all that it had to give. Wonderful to have once again in the digital music library! Great job, and many thanks for this!!
