Argenta Fan
Argenta fan though I am, I had not heard this Tchaikovsky 4th before acquiring the HDTT transfer recently. As far as I know this was never issued on CD by the parent company (Decca) and it is quite clear why. I have no trouble with Argenta's conception of the work itself, but Roy Wallace's engineering leaves much to be desired, with some strange balancing oddities that favour the strings and tympani but recess the wind and brass. This imbalance seems to be an issue especially in the finale, where the tympani sound is booming and lacking any definition. I have top-of-the-range Rega sound equipment; the sound was marginally better through headphones. Disappointing, given the brilliant sound achieved by the same team in the Debussy 'Images' recorded just a few months later.
For Argenta fans only
I expected more. The performance is a bit hard driven for the first three movements, and than unaccountably relaxes for the epic final movement. The classic Mravinsky readings do the exact opposite. I know which approach I prefer! And the 1955 sound doesn't rock my world, either - it's rather boxy and scrawny sounding; nothing like the stunningly transparent and open recordings that Decca was routinely achieving 2-3 years later.
