Duke Ellington, already an iconic figure in jazz, collaborated with Billy Strayhorn, his longtime arranger and pianist, to reinterpret classical works. The Nutcracker Suite was part of their broader effort to demonstrate jazz's capability to transform and reinterpret other musical traditions.
The project was as much an artistic exploration as it was a statement: jazz could elevate itself to interpret canonical classical works, positioning itself as a high art form.
