Like listening to a live performance, which it is
I very much enjoy simply recorded performances that capture the sound of the live performance from the audience's perspective. That is exactly what these Direct to Tape Recordings (DTR) deliver. Always using just two microphones direct to a two channel analogue tape recorder, these recordings have a relaxed simplicity to the sound that is utterly engaging. No compression, no limiting, no post-processing, just pure, simple, and highly resolved analogue sound. Importantly, these are recorded live-to-tape. There is no splicing or editing. What we hear is the unedited live performance - a singular achievement to be cherished. According to the liner notes, the Ms. Frazier's trumpet does have valves, but in its uncoiled design it also reflects much of the sound we have come to expect of Baroque brass instruments played in the style of the period. Challenging to play would not be an overstatement. Flutist and organist perform these works very sympathetically and adapt their instruments very nicely to capture the spirit and sound quality suitable for these works. Ms. Frazier's ability to deliver the ornamentation expected in these works is quite engaging. The listening experience is that of a live performance in a nice acoustical environment. The recording captures a very nice balance between organ and trumpet, with neither overwhelming the other and without spotlighting. Well done! HDTT delivers its usual very clean transfer in this DSD128 release to which I'm listening.
