What Stokowski did best...
String sound it what Stokowski was famous for (along with Bach transcriptions). He also took an extraordinary interest in the recording process and was not passive in the production of most of his recordings. The original experiments in stereophonic sound were done by him with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Dr. Harvey Fletcher (arguably the father of stereophonic sound) when he was at Bell Labs. They did their experiments in Carnegie Hall. I once had lunch with Dr. Fletcher (four of us students and him...all to ourselves) and he told us about that process. Some of the recordings eventually used in Walt Disney's Fantasia existed before Walt became aware that theses experiments were happening. Anyhow, this recording features all of that...his proclivity for lush string sound and his "meddling" in the recording process to get the best possible sound for the time. I only wish this album included his Barber Adagio for Strings, as well. HDTT always gives us copies of "all there is" on the masters and this is no exception. I have 64 Stokowski albums ranging from early '78's to his last recordings were made when he was over 90 years old. I love the guy because he puts his personal stamp on everything he touches...he was like no other conductor of his time...sometimes he hits and sometimes he misses, but he's almost always interesting.
