Music of Percy Grainger - Frederick Fennell - Eastman-Rochester Pops
This sonic gem from Mercury Living Presence gets even better with the HDTT treatment! Keep up the good work.

Beautiful Music and Sound
Percy Grainger has always been thought of as something of an eccentric, but he was a magnificent virtuoso pianist (the 5CD APR box of his complete recordings is an essential purchase for all piano-fanciers), he made numerous arrangements of folk-tunes and dances from several countries (there are 6 versions of the Shepherd’s Hey alone) and composed delightful works such as Handel in the Strand’, which was written for two pianos. So what you have here is a combination of arrangements and original compositions. The performances are beautifully conducted by Frederick Fennell and the sound is superb, which, despite the provincial orchestral playing, make this highly desirable. (For those who want to explore Grainger’s music further the Chandos, Grainger Edition is well-worth investigating). The transfer is superior to the Mercury CD – where it is coupled with Eric Coates – it was compared to, having more space, a better dynamic range, clarity, projection, weight and analogue-like timbres.

A++ Sonics of some delightful Grainger works
What a delightful discovery is this release from HDTT: a superbly recorded Mercury Living Presence album (SR-90219) in outstanding sonics. Whatever you may think of Percy Grainger's music, you need to hear this Mercury recording in this excellent transfer. For me, Percy Grainger's music is largely that light fluffy taffeta with which a little goes quite a long way. Still, this collection of Grainger works is completely enjoyable, and some pieces verge on outstanding. Get it for the excellent sound quality, enjoy it for the delightful 45+ minutes of head bobbing and toe tapping that will follow as you listen to these tunes.
