Stunning Performances and Recorded Sound
It's Impossible to believe that these are 60 year old stereo recordings; they are that good! And the performances are a marvel. Conducting what had been Toscanini's orchestra, Stokowski finds more drama and sly wit in the Shostakovich symphony than any other conductor on record and the solo work by orchestra principals is a consistent delight. The Gliere symphony also gets the full Stokowski treatment, this time with the Houston Symphony. Gliere's original score lasts well over an hour which Stokie 'arranges' to a compact 38 minutes. Much as I love the original, I have to admit that Stokowski's tight distillation doesn't sacrifice anything essential and is a dramatic wonder. HDTT's CD captures Capitol's stunning stereo sound to perfection; ditto with the United Artist Shostakovich recording. Highest recommendation!
