This early stereo recording has all the right elements: beautiful music by Bach, excellent sound by Decca engineers, a wonderful venue at Victoria Hall, Geneva, and a great interpretation of Bach's organ music by Karl Richter.
Karl Richter's interpretations of J.S. Bach's organ works were groundbreaking in their time and remain highly influential. He was one of the key figures in the mid-20th century movement to revive Bach's music, primarily through historically informed performances. However, he only sometimes adhered to the purist period-instrument approach that later gained prominence. His style combined Romantic intensity with Baroque clarity, making his recordings stand out.
Unlike some later period-performance specialists, Richter allowed for a particular Romantic expressiveness in his playing, which gave his performances a unique emotional weight. His interpretations often had a sense of grandeur and spirituality, particularly well-suited for Bach's music.
