A most listenable performance. Francescatti does not engage in any virtuoso display with the violin, but he does produce a long, singing legato line, and maintains a high level of concentration throughout the performance. Walter partners him well, with the characteristic Walter love of the music being evident. The Columbia Symphony Orchestra produced some engaging and expressive wind solos. Has this orchestra been underestimated?
The recording betrays its nearly six decades of age with some thin treble, possibly also a result of the Los Angeles American Legion Hall, which was rather small for a full symphony orchestra. Nevertheless, all the various sections of the orchestra can be heard, especially the previously mentioned wind solos, and the timpani are well recorded. The engineers have captured a nice, tuneful bass line from the lower strings.
An enjoyable experience all round.
