Rhythmic and Detailed Jazz Playing
An album themed around baseball, with most pieces written by Russell Freeman, with Freeman playing one of two pianos and André Previn the other. Legendary drummer Shelly Manne plays percussion. The tracks are largely played in a virtuoso staccato rhythmical manner, although there are contrasting tracks. The recording comes from the same team and in the same year as the legendary Sonny Rollins “Way Out West” album. The two pianos are positioned right and left on the stereo stage, without directional exaggeration, and Shelly Manne is in the middle and audibly a bit behind the pianos. The age of the recording-a year and a half older than me-is not an issue. At that stage in the history of technology, the abilities of the recording equipment were often well ahead of those of the replay equipment.

Three Masters in a rollicking great album
This is a splendid jazz album full of swing, joy and fire, while still residing firmly in the West Coast Jazz vibe. With three masters performing in this unusual combination of two pianos and drums, this album is a particular treat. Previn and Freeman have very similar, very complementary playing styles, so there is great synergy and also great difficulty knowing who is playing when -- not that it matters! Previn always described himself as a musician who played jazz, not a jazz musician. But what a great jazz player he was. If you don't know his jazz performances, here's a very good place to start educating yourself. I promise you will start searching for more. Roy DuNann's typically excellent recording skills are on full and meritorious display in this recording. With two pianos and a drum kit to capture, DuNann delivers superbly. The recording is clean, highly resolved sonics, with great dynamics. Both the capture of the two pianos and the sound of the cymbals and drums are spot on.
