André Previn - Plays Fats Waller

André Previn’s jazz career is indeed fascinating. Though he's best known as a classical conductor, he maintained a genuine connection to jazz throughout his life. His jazz roots took shape in the early years of his career, especially during the 1940s and 1950s, when he worked as a pianist, composer, and arranger in Hollywood. His early work in film scoring with MGM earned him several Academy Awards, yet he always returned to jazz as a source of personal and artistic fulfilment.
Previn’s style as a jazz pianist was characterized by its wit, melodic fluidity, and subtle harmonic shifts. He was heavily influenced by bebop yet never strayed far from a rich, lyrical touch. His improvisations were highly structured, often resembling mini compositions, a reflection of his classical training. While he played with a light, almost conversational phrasing, he was also known to be highly responsive to his fellow musicians, adding layers of interaction that brought a distinctive spontaneity to his performances.
