Kondrashin's Shostakovich 4th
Kondrashin's Shostakovich cycle would be an obvious first choice for this repetoir, had it been recorded by virtually any other recording company. The present release sounds a vast improvement over the BMG/Melodya CDs, so there's really no reason to hesistate on this.
Great performance, Melodiya sonics
The title says it all. A brutally incisive and powerful performance of Shostakovich's most enigmatic and dissonant symphony. The sonics suck - this is from Melodiya, after all - but not so badly as to get in the way of the searing music.

A justly famous performance in the best sound ever.
This performance is justly famous, and the recording as provided in this HDTT transfer is perhaps the best sounding Meloydiya recording I've heard in many years of listening. The sound quality is clean, transparent, highly detailed, with good bite from the brass, but without that scratchy etched high-end that plagues so many Meloydiya recordings, at least on LP. Do we perhaps have here a source tape that came from an all-tube electronics chain? Maybe - sounds like it. I further suspect some judicious EQ was applied during HDTT's mastering process to make this one of the most enjoyable Meloydiya recordings I can recall. The recording also benefits from that period of fewer microphones capturing the orchestra because Meloydiya simply did not have the mixing boards that could throw a zillion mics against the orchestra. The recording is all the better for it. Kondrashin's performance is brisk, with highly varied tempi. He eschews making this just a serial march of menace by treating the wry lighter segments with ironic, if acidic, humor. As another reviewer comments, Kondrashin's musicians "fully inhabit each of the schizophrenic personae — frenzied, sarcastic, sweetly innocent, vicious, catatonic." The contrasts make the finale all the more terrifying and brutal (beginning from about 18:40), as it should be. And the very final delicate fading notes that conclude the symphony are brilliantly delivered. A very worthy addition to my DSCH library. HDTT's transfer is up to its usual very high production standards.
