A superb return for a classic. This restoration is true, rich, and involving. Always a showcase for orchestra even in the scaled down revision, this Columbia gem will take you to the fair!

Genius at Work
Music-lovers can only be grateful that CBS persuaded Igor Stravinsky to record virtually all of his music for them in stereo using their own Columbia Symphony Orchestra. When he conducted his own music there was always clarity of expression and rhythmic precision, achieved through meticulous balancing of parts and dynamic variation. The phrasing is quintessentially Russian, he is alive to every change of mood, so when appropriate there is real swagger and power, loads of colour and he finds plenty of sardonic humour in Petrushka’s Room. There are innumerable other ways of doing this sublime music – I particularly like Vasily Petrenko and the RLPO on Naxos – occasionally the playing is a little scrappy and the Waltz and Grand Carnival are too literal, but this is a genius telling us how he saw his music in his old-age and as such remains hors concours. Sound-wise, there is an excellent CD in the Sony Classical Igor Stravinsky Edition. But the HDTT DSD256 has more space, a greater sense of depth, silkier string tone, the image is more vibrant and as always with DSD256 instrumental timbres are more analogue like. The remastering comes from a 15ips, 2 track tape and as CBS only produced a commercial 7.5ips, 4 track version this must be a master.

An essential interpretation in the best sound quality ever
A wonderful document of how Stravinsky heard his own composition. While I think other conductors may have done better by this work than the composer-as-conductor, this is a "must have" recording for one's music library. Just consider it essential listening. The Columbia Symphony Orchestra provides excellent support to the overall performance. The HDTT transfer delivers by far the best sonics of any release of this recording that I've heard. No extraneous noise -- just highly detailed, very clean, very clear sonics with excellent dynamics and very full frequency extension in both bass and treble. Columbia's spot mikes on the orchestral drum surely pay off here! I do not believe you can find a more rewarding release of this performance than this HDTT transfer. Superb job!
