Franck Symphony in D Minor, Paul Paray, 1961 (Gold CD)
I have collected multiple recording of the Franck Symphony in D over the decades, on vinyl and CD: Barenboim (DG vinyl, with Orch. Paris), Guilini with Berlin (DG 1987), Maazel with Berlin (DG 1961), and the RCA 24 bit CD of Munch 1957, as well as the HDTT gold CD of the same performance (much improved and great performance). But I think none come up to this HDTT (gold CD) of the 1961 Paray in performance or sound. I know some reviews opt for Paray's earlier mono recording (available in HDTT) but I love having the stereo (which I understand performance-wise is quite similar). I finally feel I have found the ideal performance with sound that doesn't become blurred and congested at high points but rather reveals the luscious harmonies. My first listen I turned down the treble--but that was just the first listen. Now I let the CD speak without any filtering. Exciting to finally find a Franck Symphony that satisfies fully.
