Definitely a winner
I bought this on the recommendation of my favorite Fanfare reviewer, James Altena. As usual, he got it right. The symphony is filled with beautiful melodies and plenty of verve. I had never heard it before and am delighted with this CD.

Kalinnikov 1st Symphony -- wonderful!
I'd been familiar with other recordings of Kalinnikov's 1st for many years, and have always liked the music -- it's fun to listen to! (Those who know the technical aspects of music can fill in all the blanks that I've left ...) My opinion of the Melodiya recordings from the 1960s has not always been good, even when they have been picked up by Western companies. I have no such qualms about HDTT's work on this marvelous production. It is just wonderful, fully extended in frequency, with bass, midrange, and treble well-balanced and clear. There is enough range in dynamics to make the symphony come to life, but not so much as to overwhelm your listening room -- or your ears! -- during the loud bits. If you like the music, don't hesitate -- download this now and enjoy!
Charmer of a symphony from 19th century Russia
Very accessible Russian symphony from around the time of Tchaikovsky. The opening theme has an easy appeal and this is followed by an almost irresistible/instantly likeable second one. The whole work is definitely worth getting to know, having an unaffected, idyllic slow movement. Kalinnikov was not a prolific composer, dying at 35 years from tuberculosis. Thankfully though, he left us this charmer of a symphony. Direction and playing very strong in authentic Russian style. 1961 recording excellent for the time in a pleasingly resonant acoustic. Transfer by HDTT state of the art, going on my 24/96 purchase.
Good Music.
I heard this symphony by chance and I could not forget it. I found this on HDTT and bought immediately to cherish my good experience with this symphony.
