Monteux's Daphnis in astonishing sound
With Ravel, orchestral color is an important part of the expeerience, and never more so than in Daphnis et Chloé, which runs the gamut from riotous excess to the most delicate nuance. I have the CD reissue of this performance in "The Originals" series, which is pretty good but still obviously an old recording improved somewhat. It didn't prepare me for the overwhelming success of the http transfer, which sounds as good as anything made today, and better than most. Another performance of 60 + years ago gets a new lease on life. (You don't need me to tell you how good the performande itself is--it has long been acknowledged as a classic.)
Like they say . . .
How fortunate Ravel, Debussy and Stravinsky were to have many of their major achievements brought into the world by one of history's great conductors. Here is, in effect, the performance Monteux and Ravel probably wished for at the premiere, from one of the greatest bands on the planet, in unbelievable sound. Riveting from start to finish (and I'm not head over heels about the piece, which can sound like Richard Strauss with a French cream sauce, but not in the hands of these master chefs).

Ravel - Daphnis Et Chloé - Pierre Monteux - London Symphony Orchestra
Excellent transfer. Captures the dynamics and essence of the original recording with great clarity.

Astonishing!
I first heard this album with a vinyl disc of the 70's, and I have a well-remastered CD which I listened to many times, but this gives a far better sound : the body is rich, the soli are vivid, the colour is more natural. Excellent.
