Shelly Manne & His Men – At The Black Hawk Vol. 1 is a classic live jazz album recorded in 1959 at the Black Hawk nightclub in San Francisco. Shelly Manne, a prominent American jazz drummer, leads his quintet, which was one of the most respected West Coast jazz groups of the era. The "At the Black Hawk" series is celebrated for its energetic performances and showcases the quintet's improvisational skills and group chemistry.
The Black Hawk recordings capture the quintet at the peak of their creative powers. Unlike studio recordings, where musicians often strive for perfection and precision, live recordings offer spontaneity and risk-taking, with the audience’s energy feeding into the performance. Manne and his band take their time with the tunes, extending them into long explorations that allow each musician to engage in creative dialogue with the others.
