“THE STOKOWSKI STRING SOUND”
TRANSFERRED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES
HDTT is very pleased to be reissuing one of the greatest gems of the Desmar catalog, the second of two great recordings made by the legendary Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977) for Desmar Records in 1975. HDTT is releasing this great recording for the first time in high resolution, sourced from the original master tapes (the other Stokowski recording for Desmar, Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 3, is slated to follow later). Stokowski made these outstanding recordings at the age of 93, and he would continue to make remarkable recordings up through June 1977, three months before his death on September 13, 1977, at age 95, and sixty-eight years after his debut concert in 1909. Stokowski was always known for the glorious, lush sound he drew from orchestral strings, and what is heard on the present recording of music written for string orchestra is no exception.
Desmar was an independent classical label in the late 1970’s that, under the leadership of artistic visionary Marcos Klorman, created an LP catalog of tremendous distinction. Desmar insisted on the very highest technical standards, and as a result, its recordings stand up beautifully today. Desmar spared no expense for these two Stokowski recordings, arranging for him to record with two great London orchestras of the time, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (heard on the instant release) and the National Philharmonic Orchestra, and with leading recording engineers of the day, Neville Boyling (this release) and Bob Auger. These two monumental Stokowski recordings stand as a testament to Klorman’s dedication to excellence and outstanding quality.
