Elegant Chopin for Cello and Piano
Beautiful Sound and Wonderful Instrument Balance provide great listening pleasure. Kudos to Nathaniel Rosen and Doris Stephenson, the original producers and John Daley and the High Definition Tape Transfer Team

Chopin with breath and sensitivity
The late cello sonata (1846-47) was written for and dedicated to Chopin’s best friend, cellist August Franchomme, and was the last work published during the composer’s lifetime. The premiere of the sonata (minus the first movement) was presented in Chopin’s final concert in 1848. Rosen and Stevenson provide a full, open-hearted performance replete with poetry and nuance. The interpretation is touching and intensely personal, a great collaboration. They give breath to moments many performers “drive by.” The rustic scherzo is contrasted with charm and the songful trio section stated with reserve and dignity. The Largo is offered as a soulful pas de deux while the celebratory and fiery finale is delivered with surprising freedom and vitality—a consistently satisfying performance overall. The flashy Grand Duet Concertante, based on themes from the Meyerbeer’s opera Robert le diable, was written in 1832. The unusual feature of the work is that it was a collaborative effort with Franchomme. The Introduction and Polonaise brillante, op.3 originated in 1829 as an Alla polacca for Chopin's pupil, Princess Wanda Radziwill--to be performed with her father, Prince Radziwill, an amateur cellist. The following year, after meeting cellist Joseph Merk, an Introduction was composed, lending a weightier balance to the light-hearted Polonaise. Chopin dedicated the work to Merk. Owing to the rather limited scope of the cello writing in the polonaise, most cellists today play versions by Feuermann or Franchomme. The present adaptation is a based on one by Piatigorsky which presents an elegant and democratic view of both parts without robbing the piano of its original virtuosity. The entire album is marked by striking personality and individuality; their ebb and flow captures the feeling of a live performance. The recorded sound is extremely warm and lush with both instruments forward.

Masterful performances
Masterful performances by the great cellist Nathaniel Rosen and always superb pianist Doris Stevenson. This duo performed many outstanding recitals together and made some of my favorite recordings. Rosen has such a magisterial long line to his playing style; his work is simply sumptuous. And Doris Stevenson has a delightfully elegant touch, with a lightness and finesse that is to die for. Yet she plays with great power when needed. Most significantly, their partnership is a match of shared musical sensibilities that is rarely matched; never exceeded. Excellent sound quality. John and Bob have done a terrific job in this transfer from the master tape.
