Almost perfect
Excellent sonics and masterly performance. I deducted a star for the glitch that occurs between 2 movements. It's really jarring.

Barbirolli and Elgar
There are two great English conductors who were distinguished as interpreters of Sir Edward Elgar. One was Sir Adrian Boult and the other Sir John Barbirolli. Of the two I believe the more emotional interpretations were those of Sir John. HDTT has transferred his inimitable recordings from the rather sad Angel Records that we had in the US. Now we get the real thing with the full range of the orchestra and thus of Sir John’s interpretation. Of the First Elgar Symphony one can only marvel at the wonderful, full-bodied work—the one Richard Strauss thought was the best of English symphonies. Get this one and hear Elgar in its fulness of sound and Barbirolli’s way with this grand symphony.
A reference performance.
Plus, very good sound. A must have for fans of the composer and the conductor.

Barbirolli's Elgar 1st terrific; sound also
Sir John Barbirolli was a terrific conductor of late Romantic scores (try his civilians, also available on HDTT). His Elgar First Symphony is a case in point. I am an Elgar nut, in this one definitely meets my criteria for keeping the pulse moving along and thereby making sense of a difficult score while at the same time not neglecting any of the heart-rending gorgeous details. In the superb HDTT DXD sound, it's a must-have for the Elgarians among us, of whom I hope there are many.

Elgar 1/Barbirolli
Great symphony, together with one of the great British conductors and lovely remastered sound. Can't go wrong!
