not worth hi-res
so compressed and shrill in the louder sections, but if it's just woodwinds or single instruments it's quite nice

Just the Best
Fritz Reiner/CSO recordings from the early fifties to his retirement and his death were simply superb. The six Rossini Overtures capture the vivacity of the works while the musicians of the Chicago musicians play at the very highest level and Reiner whips them not a fury where called for. If I had to choose but one [and I wouldn’t want to do that] it would be that old warhorse William Tell——yes with the final movement used for the radio’s Lone Ranger——the lovely cello in the first section, the wild storm in the second, the charming third movement, and the unbelievable race to the finish; all in sound that belies its sixty years plus age. Get it while you can. You should be astounded by the sound HDTT has given us.
Pure fun, in the Hall of Fame.
I doubt that any musician had a whole lot of fun under Reiner . . . but the CSO sure sounds like they are enjoying themselves here as they strut their stuff. The mind-boggling solo work and spectacular ensemble have always shone through going back to the original LPs. What this transfer, for the first time, captures, is the incredibly nuanced playing of the strings, at impossible speeds, and at ppp and softer, especially when trading riffs with the CSO's jaw dropping wind soloists. OK, so these are only showpieces, but OMG, what a show!!
